Sex for a role? No way, says Aruna Shields
British actress Aruna Shields, who acted with Vivek Oberoi in The Prince, gets candid about her sex appeal and working in Bollywood. Excerpts:

Is it true that you were perceived as this 'hot' actress even before the release of your first movie? Are you comfortable with the tag?
In commercial Indian cinema I think it is a good thing to be seen as attractive. Maya, my character, is a sexy, stylish, superhero... if I couldn’t be perceived as ‘hot’, I wouldn’t have got the role.
I’ve been given the opportunity by Kumar Taurani to break my glamorous stereotype in European films so it doesn’t worry me.
People talk about the infamous casting couch in Hindi films. In other words, you have to do a little bit of sleeping around to get good roles. Did you go through the same thing?
In England, I feel safe as most of the casting directors are women... so watch out, boys! There is absolutely no chance I would ever sleep with anyone to get a role. The energy I give off when I meet people in the industry reflects that. I believe they are looking for an experienced actor who is right for the role, that’s it.
But I’ve heard horror stories about people abusing their power with beginners. You have to make sure you have got your head screwed on. In any case, it is a very good banner to work with, so I didn't have to worry about anything.

Would you mind doing a lovemaking scene in Hindi films, considering that you have come from the UK film industry?
I’m totally free and not scared of doing lovemaking scenes. It would depend upon whether I liked the script and trusted the director.
Is it true that there are a lot of explicit scenes in Jag Mundhra’s film Private Moments? Is it true that the script narrated to you and what turned out in the end were different?
Private Moments is a chick flick advertised in the press as London’s version of Sex and The City. It’s a comedy, so the steamy scenes, in context, are meant to amuse. I would also have no problems doing lovemaking scenes in a drama if I liked the script. Doing challenging scenes helps build your confidence and make you less self-aware.
Why did you land up in Bollywood? Don’t you think you have better prospects there [in the UK] than in Hindi films? Or do you want to tread both lines, as in work in both film industries?
They were looking for a new international face and held castings in London. I fit the bill and liked the idea of doing an action thriller.
I work all over the world and would like to remain an actor who crosses markets. It’s very rewarding and insightful working with so many different cultures. I love it!

India’s new bond girl is very happy for her debut film prince in bollywood.British actor Aruna Shields, of Anglo Indian descent, begun her education at a convent school before winning an academic scholarship to attend boarding school. She went onto gain a distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She also obtained a degree from Central St Martins, London. Aruna's passion lay in performance and while at a theatrical workshop she was spotted by an acting agent.
Shooting everything from action to arthouse Aruna is one to watch out for... She’s just finished two leads in studio features out worldwide in cinemas 2010. Tribal woman Aki in the epic adventure AO: The Last Neanderthal and espionage agent Maya in action thriller Prince.
Aruna's earlier work includes touring in theatre tour for over a year. Starring lead in art-house feature Mr. Singh/Mrs.Mehta. Leads in experimental and feature films like Mission Improbable, Private Moments, Violent Lesson, and underwater film Bait. Various roles in other films.

The slinky femme fatale of forthcoming film PRINCE, Aruna Shields, is yet another British Indian lassie to set foot in Bollywood. The fearless and talented actress is increasingly gaining popularity for her provocative kissing scene with the 'Prince' aka Vivek Oberoi.
After Aishwarya Rai, Shields is the first lady to make Vivek's cheeks turn red in reel life with her confident approach while shooting for the scene. In fact, Vivek confesses that the film required a lot of hot kissing and other scenes between the actor and his co-stars, but he was not comfortable with these.
However, he had to give in as per demand of the story of the film. The story has Vivek Oberoi playing the part of a street smart thief who romances these three gorgeous beauties much in the fashion of James Bond 007 flicks. The movie is being directed by Kookie Gulati and produced by Tips Industries. The film has a big budget and is being made on a grand scale.
Vivek Oberoi assures that the audience would see him in a quite different avatar in the ‘Prince-Its Showtime’. The flick is out and out action and will have Vivek Oberoi jumping from twenty-eighth floors several times.
In fact, before going for the shooting of the film, Vivek Oberoi had to undergo five months of rigorous physical training to prepare for the role. As the film required high voltage action sequences from the main lead, it was not possible to go with the original look of Vivek Oberoi. He lost around fourteen kgs before going to shoot the film.

Aruna Shield destined to make an impressive debut in Prince is looking forward to her next release, AO-The Last Neanderthal, which was shot in Bulgaria. “It's an epic-adventure based 30,000 years ago in a lost savage world,” she says. The French movie tells the tale of the gentle AO who works hard to live a decent life in the fierce climactic conditions of the Alps. Things start to go wrong when he is targeted by a fierce clan of homo sapiens.
The British actress, who was educated at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama and earned a degree at the UK’s top art school - Central St Martin’s in London, is set to take Bollywood by storm in much the same way as Katrina Kaif. She admits that acting is in her blood. “I love to act,” she confirms, “When I was a child, I was a part of all the school plays. As a teenager, I loved stage and during holidays worked with theatre. My first UK agent spotted me at a theatrical workshop and signed me. I just love my job!”
Aruna’s intimate scene with Vivek Oberoi in Prince is set to ignite the screens in April, but equally audiences will be stunned by her all-action performance. The young actress is skilled in a number of arts including shooting, martial arts, absailing, scuba diving, sky jumping, gymnastics, belly dancing, snake-dancing and flamenco.
